If you want to be a Personal Trainer, you will need to undertake the Certificate IV in Fitness. This national qualification allows you to train and develop your own clients in an unsupervised setting.

Course Outcomes
Successful graduates from this course have achieved the following employed positions:
- a pathway to work as an employed or self-employed personal trainer in settings such as fitness facilities, gyms, leisure and community centres, client workplaces and homes, and outdoor locations.
- Personal trainers may offer services to individuals and groups, and may provide online training services. In some employment contexts, personal trainers may be involved in team leadership or supervisory activities.

Entry Requirements
A prerequisite for entry into this course is the completion of the following units of competency or the units that have been superseded:
- HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
- HLTWHS001 Participate in workplace health and safety
- SISFFIT032 Complete pre-exercise screening and service orientation
- SISFFIT033 Complete client fitness assessments
- SISFFIT035 Plan group exercise sessions
- SISFFIT036 Instruct group exercise sessions
- SISFFIT040 Develop and instruct gym-based exercise programs for individual clients
- SISFFIT047 Use anatomy and physiology knowledge to support safe and effective exercise
International students must:
- Be at least 18 years of age,
- Provide evidence of completing at least the equivalent of Australian Year 10,
- Successfully complete the Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) online test as per ALG’s Language, Literacy and Numeracy Requirements Factsheet,
- Meet English Language Entry Requirements as per ALG’s English Proficiency Requirements Factsheet
A prospective student does not need to provide evidence of an English test score with their application if one of the following applies:
- Prospective student is a citizen and holds a passport from UK, USA, Canada, NZ or Republic of Ireland.
- Prospective student has completed at least 5 years’ study in English in one or more of the following countries: Australia, UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, or the Republic of Ireland.
- Completed at least 6 months of a Certificate IV level course in an Australian RTO.
Please also note that if you are applying for more than one course with us, you will only need to complete the LLN online test once. Students returning to studies at ALG after a significant gap may be required to complete the LLN online test at the discretion of ALG.
Study Mode
The course duration is 52 weeks, with time divided into both training (on campus and self-paced, distance) and assessment. This time includes both face-to-face and self-paced training and assessment.
Students are required to attend 14 hours of classroom training per week and complete structured self-study of 6 hours per week. This is a mandatory component of a student’s study and student’s attendance, and participation will be monitored.
Training and Assessment
Your class room learning will take place in both theory classrooms and working gyms. This means your classroom will have similar equipment, educational and physical resources to those you will find in gym or fitness centre.
In your classes you can expect to take the role of client and instructor, engage in roleplays, create programs and simulate learning activities that you will then put into practice in the workplace. You will learn and develop your knowledge to plan for your clients’ care.
In addition, you will be required to undertake self-paced learning and submit written assessments. A number of practical and skills based assessments will be undertaken in class.
A first aid course is also part of this qualification.
Assessment Methods
Assessment will occur through a variety of methods, including projects incorporating role-plays, case studies, observations, and short answer questions. Assessment conditions will ensure a simulated workplace environment for classroom-based assessment.
Practical Classes
You will undertake half of your timetabled study program in a working gym. In this practical you will be learning and practicing the skills you will be able to use in your own workplace. In order to successfully complete this component of your study, you will have to successfully complete a range of tasks including a log book and practical exam.

Course Requirements
- All students attending practical classes at a gym must wear appropriate gym clothing and shoes and bring a towel to all practical classes.
- Some practical classes may be conducted outdoors so students should also carry appropriate sun protection and clothing to all classes in event class is conducted outdoors.
- A water bottle is also highly recommended for students to carry every class.
- All students will be required to have access to a laptop or desktop with Microsoft office to complete assessments
- It is advised for a streamlined assessment experience, to bring laptops or tablet devices to class
