Student Support

We offer a range of support services to help you throughout your academic experience at ALG and beyond. From academic support, wellbeing services to mental health support, we are here to guide and support you whenever you need us.

To learn more about the services, facilities and resources available to ALG students, please refer to our Student Handbook. This handbook contains contact details for key ALG staff members, and other useful information to support your studies. You will receive a copy of the handbook during your orientation and can always find it in the Student Hub section on Canvas.

Our dedicated Student Experience Team, as the main point of contact for all students, offers friendly support and guidance to ALG students on administrative matters, including:

  • Study schedule – Timetables, attendance, payment plans.
  • Academic matters – Progression, complaints and appeals, reasonable adjustment, recognition of prior learning, course credit, suspensions, withdrawal.
  • Access to facilities – Printing, copying, on-campus computers, online library.
  • Access to services – Referrals to student support services, legal support, emergency assistance, health services.
  • General matters – Student portal guidance, public transport concession card, Student ID cards, fee remittance.

We operate as a national team, which means we can support all students across Australia, regardless of our individual campus locations. We can be contacted on weekdays (Mondays to Fridays) from 8:30am to 5pm by telephone on 1300 254 000 or by email at support@alg.edu.au.

Feel free to drop by the campus and say hello! Please note that Sydney’s Quay Street campus opening hours are slightly different – Monday & Wednesday from 8:30am to 6:00pm; Tuesday, Thursday & Friday from 8:30am to 5pm.

We are dedicated to helping you reach your full learning and academic potential, starting from your first day with us until you graduate. Our Academic support services include:

  • Trainer Support: Reach out to your trainers for assistance via Canvas, our learning management system, for help with assessments, classes and other academic matters.
  • Academic Counselling Sessions: Discuss academic challenges, help to improve your academic performance, or explore your career goals with our Course Advisors, who are experts in their fields. Meet them in person on campus or online via Zoom.

ALG offers LLN support classes to help students with their literacy and communication skills. These classes run on a weekly basis for 1 hour from week two to nine of each term. These classes are separated into two areas: Reading/Writing and Communication Skills.

Counselling Services

We help support your emotional wellbeing and personal growth through our wellbeing and counselling services. In partnership with AccessEAP, our confidential counselling service is available 24/7 and free for all ALG students.

AccessEAP offers counselling and coaching for various challenges such as balancing study, work and personal life, personal issues, financial and legal concerns, trauma, grief and loss, improving relationships, communication skills, depression and anxiety, facing crisis and trauma, LGBTQI+ support, and coping with homesickness. It is important to know that counsellors only provide counselling services and do not manage student educational or administrative matters. Appointments can be scheduled via the AccessEAP website or by calling 1800 959 192.

First Aid Support

Our team of certified First Aid staff members are equipped to handle medical emergencies efficiently.

Before each term, new students must attend an orientation program. The program is specifically designed to provide you with the necessary tools to succeed at ALG and important information to help you adjust to studying and living in Australia.

During our orientation sessions we cover topics including but not limited to student support services, legal services, emergency and health services, campus facilities and resources, ALG’s complaints and appeals process, course progress and attendance requirements, campus health and safety procedures, and employment rights information and guidance to resolve workplace issues through institutions like the Fair Work Ombudsman.

You’ll also have a guided tour of your campus, a session with one of our industry professional trainers and you’ll join fun social events.

Grievance, Complaints and Appeals

ALG is committed to creating an equitable and fair teaching and learning environment where the views of all stakeholders are valued, listened to and acted upon as appropriate, for continuous development and improvement.

We acknowledge that from time to time students may be dissatisfied with conditions experienced in the teaching and learning environment and may need to access ALG’s complaints and appeals process. ALG recognises the complaints and appeals process as an important framework through which ALG can identify valuable feedback from stakeholders and resolve such matters as practicably and equitably as possible.

All students have access to a fair, inexpensive complaints and appeals process that includes access to an independent external body if necessary.

Reasonable Adjustment Support

ALG offers its students reasonable adjustment in assessment under the key assessment principle of “fairness”, defined in the Standards for RTOs (2015). 

This principle applies particularly to students with a disability. Adjustments are determined in collaboration with the student, their advocate and ALG’s academic staff. These measures are important because they ensure that students with disabilities have the same educational opportunities as everyone else. 

This can also extend to students who have suffered a severe injury that has affected their ability to study in some capacity.

Students can request reasonable adjustment by submitting a Reasonable Adjustment Request.

Trainer Support

Wanting to ask your trainer a question about your assessment, your grades, your class or anything else related to your academic studies?

You can do this via your Student Learning Portal (Canvas).

Here’s how:

  1. Login to your Student Learning Portal (Canvas)
  2. On the left sidebar menu, click ‘Inbox’
  3. Compose a new message, select your course and enter your trainer name
  4. Ensure you include ‘Academic Enquiry’ in your subject line
  5. Once sent, this will go directly to your trainer
