HOW IS YOUR MOTIVATION?
We hope that our team members’ New Years’ Resolutions in our last issue sparked some inspiration to make one (or more) of your own!
While it may seem a bit mundane, there’s actually very important psychology behind goal setting in your life. These goals don’t have to be made at any one particular point throughout the year, but starting fresh in the New Year can be that little push you need to direct yourself to who you want to be.
“Anyone can enjoy the benefits of setting a goal and pursuing it—whether you’re a student, employee, business manager, or stay-at-home parent” (Chadwick, 2019) so let’s have a look at some of the benefits of goal setting:
1. ASSESSMENT
Setting goals allows you to really look at your life, assess where you are and identify what you’re good at and what you may need to improve on.
2. DIRECTION
Setting goals for your near and far future enables you to see what direction you’re headed for. Once you know what you want, it’s easier to start and work towards!
3. FOCUS
If you have a specific goal in mind, you can focus your attention on the things that work for you and can dismiss what works against you. Setting a goal allows you to organise your life around what you truly want and help you work towards that goal!
4. INSPIRATION
Having a goal set in stone can fill you with a sense of excitement. The anticipation of being able to cross something off the list of things you must do and things you want to do, whether big or small, can bring inspiration to your every day life!
5. HAPPINESS
Maybe the most important of all, setting and achieving goals you have made for yourself promotes happiness and satisfaction in life. Being able to measure your progress through the little goals and larger ones shows how far you’ve come and can show what you’re capable of, even when you might not think so.
If there’s one thing you all take away from this, it’s that small steps can lead to big things and each of those small steps should be celebrated! Whether it’s going out for that walk, reading that book, or managing to drink those eight glasses of water each day, each goal is a step towards becoming the ‘you’ you want to be.
We hope this little exercise has inspired you to set some goals to give you that little extra motivation you may be lacking at this time.
Best of luck!!
