After receiving plenty of face-to-face training, role plays and simulations to make sure you feel ready and confident to take the next step, you will be able to apply what you have learned in our student clinic. Our student clinic is a supervised real-life counselling clinic that allows you to use your newly acquired skills with real clients.

Entry Requirements - Skills, Knowledge and Experience
The learner group for this qualification are people wishing to gain a qualification in order to work as a counsellor, case manager or support worker in a number of community services organisations. The learner group are those who require a structured, classroom based program with significant practical experience.
This is an entry level course and no previous skills or experience are necessary. However, learners should be aware that the Diploma of Counselling usually adds to their skills set and students will have better career opportunities if they have an existing community services qualification.
Entrants must have:
- Sufficient level of language, literacy and numeracy levels in order to interpret documents, learner guides and assessment tools, prepare written reports and plans. For more information please view our English Requirements Factsheet.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills in order to establish and manage professional networks and client relationships with clients of various ages and backgrounds.
Students need to be able to relate to all types of clients and have a keen interest to assist these clients to live life to the fullest. Students must have good problem solving skills, sound literacy and numeracy skills, be enthusiastic, tactful, patient and have a sense of humour.
The course is aimed at students 20 years of age and over.
Amount of Training, Volume of learning, Mode of Study and Course Expectations
This program is timetabled for 1200 hours over a course duration of 78 weeks. This time is divided into both training (on campus and self-paced) and assessment. Students will be required to attend the campus for 150 hours per term and engage in self-paced study of 50 hours per term. A term is typically 10 weeks.
The amount of training component is estimated at 80% of the students overall learning (960 hours) and the remaining 20% (240 hours) is attributed to assessment. If required, students have the option to further extend their training hours with additional catch up classes, study groups and resits as published in the timetable.
The volume of learning refers to the total amount of time that a student would be expected to dedicate to successful completion of the course. It includes the structured part of the course as defined above, as well as the self-study, research and practicing of skills that a student would do in their own time. The total Volume of Learning is estimated at 1800 hours (1200 structured hours and 600 unstructured). Some students may find that they need more study time and others will find that they can achieve the required level of knowledge and skills in less time than this estimate.
Training and Assessment
Your class room learning will take place in theory class rooms and simulation labs. This means your classroom will have similar equipment as you would find in a clinic environment.
In your classes you can expect to be undertaking client assessment, delivering sessions, note taking, debriefing and using a range of industry operating models such as creating individualised plans to simulate learning activities that you will then put into practice in the workplace.
In addition, you will be required to undertake self-paced learning and submit a written assessment kit online. A number of practical and skills based assessments will be undertaken in class.
A 150 hour clinic practicum will be undertaken in your last term of study. This clinic is open to the general public and allows you to develop and practice the skills that you will be able to use in your own workplace. Clinic assessment will entail a combination of observation, questioning, discussion and workplace supervisor interview reports. All learners are required to provide a signed logbook and time sheet to verify they have successfully demonstrated the practical components of each of the required competency outcomes.
Your training will occur on campus and within the workplace. The work placement can be arranged by the College, or you may be able to nominate your own workplace (subject to approval). If the College is arranging your work placement, we will endeavour to find a workplace which is close to your campus (subject to availability).
